Exhaust Failure Mode
    As with many cars if subjected to frequent cold stop/starts and heavy winter salting, the rear-box failure point is where the engine-side exhaust pipe enters it. A replacement is circa £220/300$US (less from Roebuck Mazda, USA).

    Catalysts can last well over 100k miles, and USA track people have not found premature failure through overheating (indicating high quality). Their price is around £300 from Mazda UK Main Dealers (93-V6), and £100 from the aftermarket. Clogging is rare, but not impossible - the car will struggle to accelerate even to 40mph.

Exhaust Replacements
    A common replacement state-side is the Borla unit, of heavy guage T304 Stainless Steel, with high quality welds & hangers. US prices are around 350$US from the catalyst-back (replacing resonator/S-pipe/rear box) with a lifetime warranty and sound very like stock. Fitment is for 93-95 V6/I4 cars, with OBD-II cars requiring a short extension pipe (catalyst movedcloser to engine for better first 15-seconds emissions). Environmentally, a stainless exhaust is a fit once for life.
